Dr. Kenneth Lew – Singapore Speaker Series
Dr. Kenneth Lew may have collected many university academic and scholastic accolades, but the one closest to his heart is his National University Hospital’s “Most Courteous Employee” Award. A prolific clinician, he is the Founder of both the boutique dental Tanglin Dental Clinics in Singapore, an orthodontic-centric group practice; and Dr KL Ortho Inc, the well-regarded orthodontic education and mentoring arm with almost a two-decade presence in the Asia Pacific. As an educator, Kenneth demystifies and teaches orthodontics and latterly, generic clear aligners, to more than 2,000 dentists in the Asia Pacific. Several of his mentees now own successful dental chains in Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Thailand and many have proceeded to specialist orthodontics pathway as a calling.
Dr. Lew’s underpinning wish is to play a small part, as a building block, establishing Singapore on the dental world map. He consistently endeavours to turn his passion for Orthodontics on its head, to make it clinically realistic and achievable for both practitioner and patient. To this end, Dr. Kenneth Lew has published over 60 Scientific, Orthodontic-focused articles in internationally peer-reviewed journals. Early research focused on the biomechanics and biological changes underpinning orthodontic tooth movement, and then on what ‘clicked in’ as a ‘beautiful Asian facial profile’, which has been repeatedly cited worldwide in many other orthodontic publications. Like all things, much has to be regarded as ‘works in progress’ if one is to achieve more.
Dr. Lew received his Bachelor of Dental Surgery training at The National University of Singapore under a Public Service Commission Scholarship. Dr. Lew went on to pursue his Master training in Orthodontics (MDS Orthodontics) from the University of Adelaide under a National University of Singapore Postgraduate Scholarship. He threw himself with the same enthusiasm, in his first decade as an orthodontist, a clinician and an academic in The National University of Singapore Dental Faculty, where as an orthodontic consultant, he was the first programme Director of the MDS Orthodontics Postgraduate Course. In 1992, he received the Fellowship of Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) without examination, as an acknowledgment of his contribution to dentistry. As a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine (FAM Singapore) who has been cited in the International Who’s who as a ‘dental expert in orthodontics’ and a founding member and past president of the Association of Orthodontist (Singapore), Dr. Lew enjoys the camaraderie when mentoring and educating dentists in this region.
