Dr. Melanie Hayes
Melanie graduated with a Bachelor of Oral Health from the University of Newcastle, where she was the Graduate Speaker and awarded the Golden Scaler for Clinical Excellence. Melanie then went on to complete an Honours Degree with First Class Honours, and then a PhD exploring “Musculoskeletal Disorders in the Australian Dental Hygiene Profession”. More recently, she has completed a Masters of Education majoring in Career Development.
Since graduating she has worked as a dental hygienist in both general and periodontal practices, as well as working in academic roles focused on both education and research. Currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney, Melanie’s work focuses on work integrated learning and educational research. She has published and presented her research widely, and is regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences.
Melanie has been a long-standing member of the Dental Hygienists Association of Australia, and served as their National President (2014-2017) and Chief Executive Officer (2017-2019). She currently sits on the Editorial Board of the DHAA quarterly publication “The Bulletin” and provides a regular column on Career Development.
In a rapidly changing profession, Melanie is keen to ensure that hygienists and oral health therapists have the support they need for professional growth and career development.
